We have a legacy of more than a century of business philosophy for the care of the planet and action for sustainability. Through the implementation of our Sustainability Strategy in our Business Units, we contribute to the transition to a sustainable society and planet.

Our permanent goal is to minimize the environmental impact of our operations, and we do this by promoting a culture of conservation among our stakeholders; by strictly complying with the laws, regulations and treaties related to the environment; through optimization; through the implementation of management systems; by investing in new technologies; by diversifying our energy portfolio; through the reduction of materials, and through the efficient use of resources.

Only by doing this we are able to promote the environmental conditions necessary to operate and grow in balance with the environment, considering the future generations.

Nuestro Planeta

Water is one of the most important substances on the planet. Without it there would be no life on Earth.

Water is one of the most important substances on the planet. Without it there would be no life on Earth.

Water is an essential part of the world we want to live in. To make a progress in the areas of nutrition, health, education and work, it is necessary to ensure universal access, availability and sustainable water management. That is why our vision is focused on the integral management of water resources, which includes efficient use, wastewater treatment, watershed conservation, universal access, sanitation and hygiene services, research, international cooperation, participation of local communities and the security of water sources.

Water is an essential resource for FEMSA, since it allows us to offer our products and services to our customers and consumers. Therefore, our purpose is to have our business units commit to being efficient in their use of water, while promoting conservation for the benefit of our company, our communities and the planet.

In our beverage business we have the goal of increasing our efficiency to 1.5 liters of water per liter of produced beverage. In 2018, we achieved 1.59 liters of water per liter of produced beverage, an increase of 19% compared to 2010, the year which serves as basis for this measurement.

Some of our initiatives for achieving efficiency:

  • Water condensation of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment reuse
  • 20 water savings initiatives
  • Bin washing machines that optimize water consumption
  • Dry urinals usage

Treatment programs

  • Water recovery system
  • Water treatment plants

Energy consumption is directly related to well-being and prosperity. The world needs energy in order to support economic and social progress and to build a better quality of life. The use of energy drives economic productivity and industrial growth, and is vital for the operation of any modern economy.

Energy is an indispensable element for the operations of FEMSA and its Business Units. We are aware that the amount of energy we consume has a direct impact on greenhouse gas emissions and, therefore, on climate change.

Sustainable energy represents an opportunity to boost economies and transform lives while protecting the planet. Regarding this environmental aspect, our goal is aimed at increasing our energy efficiency, diversifying our portfolio and increasing our transport efficiency. Our commitment is to make better use of energy and to have it come from clean and renewable sources.

Our operations’ decrease in energy consumption focuses on a comprehensive strategy that covers all business units. To achieve efficiency we encourage behaviors, work methods and production techniques, and we invest in new technologies that reduce energy consumption.

Diversifying our portfolio

We want to incorporate new sources of renewable energy to use as supply. Since 2007 we have carried out strategic alliances for the development of wind-based renewable energy Purcharse Agreements. FEMSA and its business units receive electricity from seven wind farms and a cogeneration plant.

Our goal for 2020: having 85% of our electricity consumption in Mexico come from renewable sources. To achieve our goal we carried out various projects and programs:

  • C+ Verde
  • Sustainable Mobility
  • Comprehensive Energy Efficiency Program
  • Intelligent Automation and Energy Control System
  • Clean Transportation
  • Wind-based renewable energy

Thus, FEMSA is at the forefront of environmental sustainability, substantially contributing to the reduction of climate change, investing in renewable energy resources, putting high energy efficiency practices as a priority, and adopting non-polluting energy technologies and infrastructures.

Waste and Recycling

At FEMSA we optimize waste management and reduce the impact of the waste that comes from our products and services. We are aware that our Business Units’ activities and operations generate waste, and that an inadequate final disposition causes a serious environmental impact.

The approach strategy on this topic has several lines of action and aims to achieve zero waste to landfill. Our Zero Waste vision is achieved through the recycling and reuse of the waste produced in our manufacturing processes, as well as through the use of optimization tools and sustainable production schemes.

Proper Management

We focus on reinforcing the integral, efficient and responsible management of the waste we generate through our operations; this process goes from its creation to its final destination. We have guidelines for identification, storage, transportation and disposal of waste, which comply properly with the applicable environmental regulations.

Implementing new and better alternatives for waste management has made it possible for us to achieve its proper disposal and recovery. Through the practices of reducing, reusing, recycling and composting, our programs and initiatives have managed to divert tons of waste that would be destined for landfill.

In 2018, the manufacturing plants of our beverage business in Mexico managed to recycle 100% of the waste generated in their production processes.

We continue to reduce the generation of industrial waste as well as the volume of waste that is sent to landfill. Thus, we continue on the path to achieve our goal of zero waste to landfill.

Reduce the impact of products and services

Virgin resin and recycled material

We incorporate recycled materials in our products and packaging. In 2018 we used 21% of recycled materials in PET containers, with the purpose of reaching 25% in 2020.

We are leaders in the recycling of PET in Latin America, bottle by bottle. In 2005, we joined forces to create the Mexican Recycling Industry (IMER in Spanish), the first food grade PET recycling plant in Latin America.

Elimination of unnecessary packaging

One of our commitments is to have our packaging contribute to the reduction of post-consumer waste. Through innovation, we have managed to lighten the weight of the containers in all our PET bottles and caps. Also, the size of our labels has been reduced without excluding the nutritional information.

Recycling Materials

The recovery and recycling of products’ materials is an effort that is being achieved through investment, innovation, technology and engineering. Our plastic material recycling line has the capacity to process 2,000 kilograms per hour. During 2018, we managed to recover and recycle 24 thousand tons of plastic, which were transformed into coolers, pallets and boxes.

The EOS Repare plant (disposal plant responsible for refrigeration equipment) has begun its operations. Its purpose is to ensure the recovery, recycling and final disposal of refrigeration equipment. The design and functionality of this plant allow it to recover and recycle about 98% of the materials that make up a refrigerator. It has the capacity to process 20,900 chillers per year.

Other programs that are part of FEMSA’s waste and recycling strategy are:

  • Zero Waste Plant
  • Sustainable disincorporation of equipment and furniture
  • Disincorporation and recycling of uniforms
  • Integral store waste management program
  • ‘No bag, thanks’
  • ‘Join the cause’
